Manali

One of the admirable hill stations in India is Manali. It is positioned in the mountains of Himachal Pradesh. It is situated near the northern end of Kullu. The distance between Manali and Kullu is near about 40 Kms. Manali and its surroundings have great consideration in India. Manali is recognized as Valley of Gods. It is assumed that Manali is the home of Seven Sages, which is the Saptarishi. There are many other stories which prove the existence of God in Manali. The literally meaning of Manali is 'the abode of Manu'. Manu was a Brahmin and Manali is named after this Brahmin. It is said that when the world had inundate with water and there was no life of human beings. Manu had stepped off his celestial boat in Manali. He recreated the human life in Manali. In old Manali, there is an old temple which is dedicated to sage Manu. Manali is well known for the Buddhist monasteries. The famous monastery is Thekchhokling Gompa which is built in 1969. The area of elevation of Manali is 1,950 m that means 6,398 ft. The total population counted in 2001 by India census is 6265 from which the male constitute is 64% and female is 36%. The average literacy rate in Manali is 80%. The famous places in Manali which attracts tourists towards it includes Naggar fort, Hidimba Devi temple, Arjun Gufa, Manu Temple,Tibetan Monasteries and many more.

Hidimba Temple: It is one of an ancient cave temple in Manali. It is also famous as Dhoongri temple as it is situated in Dhoongri a small village in Manali. It was built in 1553 AD by Maharaja Bhadur Singh. This temple is dedicated to Hidimbi, wife of Bhim in Mahabharata. According to Mahabharata, the second Pandav, Bhim killed the brother of Hidimbi and after that married to Hidimbi. She gave birth to a son named Ghatochkach. The son of the Hidimba and Bhim was very brave. A sanctuary dedicated to him was about 70 meters away from the Hidimba temple. It is said that when Pandav came back from the exile, Hidimbi did not come back with them. She stayed there and did Tapasya to attain status of Goddess. The temple is known for its unique style. It has four-store pagoda and excellent wooden carving. The statue of Hadimba which is made up of stone inside the temple is about 7.5 cm tall. A 24 meters tower is place above the temple. There are feet of Goddess Durga (Charan Paduka) on the left side of the entrance. Every year in the month of May, a fair is celebrated in temple of Hidimba. One can reach to temple by road very easily.

Manu Temple: This ancient temple is located about 3 km from the town Manali. This is one of the most visited places even it is situated in very congested area as it is the believed that this is the only existing temple in the country which is dedicated to sage Manu. According to Hindu Mythology, it was the place where Manu Brahmin meditated. He was the divine creator of human being who recreate human life here after deluged the world. To reach Manu temple, one has to cross the slippery stone paths. The local people of Manali often come here and worship the creator of mankind. It has always be a main attraction of the tourist because there is no other temple who dedicates the creator of mankind in the country.

Tibetan Monasteries: Manali is famous for its monasteries. As there are huge population of Tibetan people, there are several Tibetan monasteries have been established. These monasteries preserve the culture of Tibetan people. These monasteries preserved the literature and artifact of the Tibetan people. One of the famous Buddhist monasteries in Manali is Gadhan Thekchhokling Gompa which was built in 1969. The Himalayan Nyingamapa Gompa is located near the market. This is the smaller and modern monasteries in the Manali. It has different style than the previous monasteries. The fragrance of Tibetan sticks attracts the visitors and invites them again and again.
