Lahul-Spiti

Lahul-Spiti: are two different districts which are merged together. Before merging the capital of Lahul was Kardang and Spiti was Dhankar. To enter into Spiti valley one has to cross Kunzum Pass. It is 9 km away from Chandra Tal. Lahul-Spiti is connected with Manali through Rohtang Pass. The roads of the Lahul-Spiti are opened for the visitors from June to October as the roads are clear in these months. It has many Buddhist monasteries. The main monasteries are:

Tabo Monastery: It is 45 km away from Kaza. It was found in 996 CE and in the year 1996, this monastory celebrated its thousandth years. This monastory has many Buddhist scriptures, Thankas, and Buddhist statues. It has 9 temples,23 chortens,a nun's residence and a monk's residence.

Kardang Monastery: It is famous Drukpa monastery. It is located at the altitude of 3,500 m across the river. It has a large library which consists Buddhist literature in the Bhotia language including Kangyur and Tangyur scriptures.

Key Monastery: This gompa or monastery is situated near Spiti river. It is famous as the biggest monastery and also as training center for Lamas. In 1885 it had 100 monks. It celebrated its millennium in 2000 in the presence of Dalali Lama.

Dhankar Gompa: It is situated at the altitude of 3,894 m. There is a small museum in this Gompa. It was selected as one of the most dangerous sites in the world in 2006 by World Monuments fund.

Gandhola Monastery: It is also called as Gondla or Guru Ghantal Gompa. It was found in 8th century CE by Padmasambhava. It is famous for its eight storey fort. It is 4 km away from the village Tupchilling.
