Gurdwara Pathar Sahib, a beautiful Gurudwara sahib built to commemorate the founder of Sikh religion Guru Nanak, about 25 miles from Leh, 12000 ft above the sea level. The Gurdwara was built in 1517 by Buddhist Lamas. The place is worshiped by both the Sikh sangat and the local lamas. The Gurudwara Pathar Sahib's maintenance was taken over by the Army in 1948.
It is said that many centuries ago, a demon terrorized the people in Leh and they prayed to the Almighty for help. Guru Nanak Dev who traveled to many distant places was in Tibet at that time. He came to know the problem and decided to bless them. Guru Ji stepped down near the bank of the river where the demon lived. People of Leh welcomed him and demon got angered with his popularity. He decided to kill him with a large pathar(boulder). One day when he was meditating, the demon rolled down a large pathar with the intention of killing Guru Nanak. The boulder came down and when touched with Guru Nanak, it turned into wax. When demon saw him alive, he appeared to be shocked. He again tried and push the rock with his right foot, but as the pathar has softened like warm wax, his foot got embedded in it. Later, demon realized the enormous power of Guru Nanak, he fell at his feet and urged for forgiveness. Since then, residents of the area worship the pathar and offer prayers to it. Many devotees visit the Gurdwara Pathar Sahib to have their wishes fulfilled. |
